Now Is the Time to Save! By Phil Brooks Jr., Owner
With the Federal Government focused so much on using less energy in our country, now is the time to buy new vinyl windows with energy efficient glass. If you purchase our “Tax Credit Solarzone Glass Package” with our famous $189 window you qualify for a tax credit* of 30% of the cost of the windows up to $1,500. Our Tax Credit-Compliant window (ETC Window) features Low-E glass, Argon gas between the glass and foam-enhanced vinyl frames.
We also guarantee a 35% reduction in Fuel Consumption when you replace all your windows with our ETC Windows. As a practical example I replaced the windows in our home 3 years ago, and the biggest thing we noticed is where we set the thermostat in the winter. We used to set it at 75° and now we set it between 68° and 70°. Even on the coldest days (and we had plenty) we didn’t have to set it above 70°. And we didn’t have to wear jackets or use blankets. It saved a tremendous amount of money in gas.
*Please consult your accountant or other tax professional for advice related to specific tax benefits or purchasing energy efficient windows.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition Saves Energy with Variable Frequency Drives
Protecting the environment and saving energy are priorities at the Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc. Bowling Green plant.
Plant leaders identified an opportunity to significantly reduce energy expenditure by adapting a variable frequency drive, or VFD, to a stack fan in the building.
“Think of a fan in your house,” said Barry Howard, manager of technical services at the Hill’s Bowling Green plant. “The motor and fan are wired to run at certain speeds. Sometimes that speed is too high for the conditions, and you need to turn the fan down. You can save energy and money by adjusting the speed to meet the environmental needs.”
A VFD is designed to make those adjustments automatically. It reads static pressure at the fan inlet and modulates the flow of energy to meet demand. As a result, the fan runs only as fast as necessary, thereby saving money and minimizing excessive air draw from the plant.
However, purchasing a VFD for a plant is not as easy as “going to the tool department and buying it ready made,” Howard said. Engineers have to configure the drive for a specific piece of equipment and/or purpose.
Hill’s purchased the VFD from a local supplier, and the customization was done by a team of engineers from Hill’s and Control Systems Design, LLC.
Once the VFD was installed, motor current for the stack fan dropped to 90 amps from 300 amps. This led to energy savings of at least $50,000 per year.
Hill’s and its parent company, Colgate-Palmolive, began focusing on energy management about nine years ago. The Bowling Green VFD project falls in line with Colgate’s internal directive to drive sustainability in people, product and the planet.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Service One Credit Union to install Living Roof at Campbell Lane Green Addition
Bowling Green, Ky (06/03/09) – Service One Credit Union is set to install a LiveRoof® on the Campbell Lane Green Addition. The installation of this green roof will take place Tuesday and Wednesday, June 9th and 10th, 2009.
LiveRoof® is an integrated system designed by growers in conjunction with experts in the fields of architecture, roofing, logistics, and ergonomics. The benefits of adding this living “green” roof to the Campbell Lane branch are astounding. Indoor temperatures during warm/ hot weather will be decreased by 6 to 8 degrees and air-conditioning costs may be reduced up to 50%. It is estimated that LiveRoof® will extend the lifetime of this roof by 200 to 300 percent, by protecting the rooftop from ultraviolet radiation, large temperature fluctuations, drying winds, and punctures. The soil in the green roof system will act as a sponge, absorbing excess rain water and significantly reducing the storm water runoff into our sewer systems. Habitat recreation is a notable benefit as well. The plants and soil in LiveRoof® will help create a habitat for butterflies, insects and birds. The green roof will be the first of its kind in Bowling Green.
Service One Credit Union continues to make every effort with the Campbell Lane Green Addition to obtain the platinum level of LEED certification. The Green Addition currently boasts geo-thermal heating and cooling, a bio-retention basin, reclaimed timbers, ICF walls, earth berms, grass pavers, recycled floor coverings, glass block windows with nanogel, and natural day-lighting.
The Campbell Lane Green Addition has a highly anticipated completion date of mid-summer, 2009.
Service One Credit Union was chartered in 1963 as a not-for-profit financial cooperative to assist Western Kentucky University's faculty, staff and students in attaining their financial goals. Service One Credit Union's membership now includes numerous SEGs (Select Employee Groups) throughout south-central Kentucky. It is a full-service financial cooperative serving more than 14,000 members through its four branch locations and on the internet at www.socu.com.

With the ups and downs of the financial markets there are other investments a business owner or manager can commit resources and expect very good returns. One of those investment opportunities is in energy conservation and efficiency.
Investing in building system technologies is one of the best ways you can put your money to work for you and lower operating costs during tough economical times. Building system technologies include every day things one may not think about as an investment such as lighting systems, heating and air conditioning equipment, and the building itself.
As a member of the U.S. Green Building Council and an Energy Star partner Comfort Systems USA has the knowledge and expertise to help you successfully analyze your building systems and identify investment opportunities within your building to maximize a financial return better than other options that might be available today.
Our experienced energy engineers investigate, identify, and quantify building systems improvements that provide energy and/or operational savings to off-set the cost of their implementation and generate excess positive cash flow during the life of the investment.
We deliver a professional report recommending a fixed-price program that delivers the best balance between installed costs and savings. The report will provide you with a strategic action plan for cost effective strategies to lower your energy costs.
During our audit we concentrate on evaluating the facility operations with focus on the major energy consuming building systems including:
HVAC Lighting and Lighting Controls Motors and Pumping Systems Building Controls Heat Gain/ Loss through the building envelope Water and Sewer use
Our evaluation will include a review of the existing systems and equipment, identification of the existing and proposed loads on each system, identification of potential improvements, evaluation of the installation cost associated with each potential improvement, an evaluation of the annual operating costs for all of the improvements, and financing options.
If you are interested in a no cost, no commitment consultation or a complete in-depth facilities audit, please contact us at 783-8121 or email brandon.harris@comfortsystemsusa.com.

ZebraGraphics understands the need for environmentally sound printing. They understand that "going green" is more than just a buzz phrase. It is acknowledging that we are the stewards of this beautiful planet and need to take care of it for future generations.
ZebraGraphics works toward eco-friendly solutions for their clients printing needs. That's why they collaborate with environmentally sound paper manufacturers. They also use a variety of recycled papers, up to 100% post-consumer. ZebraGraphics even obtains its paper from a wind-powered paper mill, further minimizing its impact on the environment.
Most of us are aware that trees are continually replanted and harvested by the forest products industry. However, it is still important to choose recycled paper products, which use a mere fraction of the resources and require fewer chemicals to produce. The price difference for post-consumer paper is minimal, especially in comparison with the environmental savings, and it is available for most printed items. As improvements in the paper industry continue, keep in mind that availability may vary for 100% post-consumer paper.
Call ZebraGraphics for your next print project, and don't forget to ask about recycled paper options. They'll offer eco-friendly print solutions while making your business look good in print!

Liberty Receives Dual Certification by World-Wide Organizations Forest Stewardship Council and Sustainable Forestry Initiative
On June 16, Liberty President Joy Downing announced the dual certification by World-Wide Organizations – FSC and SFI. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified Liberty in January 2008. FSC is an international organization whose mission is to promote responsible management of the world’s forest. The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) also certified Liberty in June 2008. The SFI program certifies companies based on a comprehensive system of principles, objectives, and performance measures that were developed by professional foresters, conservationists, and scientists.
“The green awareness movement is rapidly gaining momentum,” stated Downing. “We specifically sought to achieve FSC/SFI Chain of Custody certification because we view it as our responsibility as a market leader to not only support the practice of responsible forestry, but to provide our customers with access to paper that is verified as environmentally conscious.”
Liberty offers clients more environmentally-friendly print options such as recycled papers, soy inks, chlorine-free bleached papers and more. The products kinder to the planet come from paper companies that are on the forefront of changing the way paper is made. This helps conserve renewable and non-renewable resources and gives more and more organizations an opportunity to partner in preservation and environmental awareness.
Choosing recycled papers and ink is not the only way businesses can join the ‘Green’ effort. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans generated approximately 251 million tons of trash and recycled only 82 million tons of materials (32.5%) in 2007. As more businesses are raising the awareness of their effects on the environment, waste generated at work is receiving more attention.
Liberty, a print communications company which opened in 1985, is located at 3021 Nashville Road in Bowling Green, Ky. For ideas on how your business can Live Green. Proforma Allows You to Promote Your Business the Responsible Way! Proforma—your one source for infinite business resources—has made focusing on the three R’s (Reducing, Reusing, and Recyling) a priority! Proforma believes in leading clients toward “green” products whenever possible, thereby helping to reduce the environmental impact of our human presence.
What Proforma Offers... Proforma offers a wide array of environmentally responsible promotional materials. Mugs and pens made from corn plastic, which unlike petroleum-based plastic is a renewable resource, are a popular option. Cutting boards and apparel made from bamboo are another excellent choice for wowing clients, as bamboo apparel has a luxurious feel similar to that of a cotton/silk blend. Proforma also offers compostable plates and cups, degradable plastic logo bags, and latex balloons. And they offer water bottles that contain the SAFE plastic additive that speeds decomposition. Proforma offers energy saving devices such as windup flashlights and solar computer backpacks and radios. Proforma offers note pads, padfolios, pens and pencils made from recycled paper as well as custom printed products that are produced with post consumer recycled content and low VOC inks.
A New Business Philosophy... In this age of increasing environmental awareness, it’s hard to ignore the impact our businesses have on the planet. Many businesses already utilize waste paper recycling programs, practice lean manufacturing, or have policies that reduce energy consumption. For those of us who haven’t already done so, it’s time to take responsibility when it comes to our promotional campaigns and printed materials.
Proforma Urges You to Keep the Three R’s in Mind... Reducing, the most desirable of the three R’s, involves taking measures to lessen our impact on our world. Products with cleaner, more sustainable materials such as corn plastic or organic cotton are good examples. These materials offer an alternative to unsustainable energy sources and reduce the amount of toxic waste in the environment. Reusing is a decision and an action comprising repeated usage instead of disposal. When determining product selection, permanence and functionality are important considerations. The more a product is used and the longer it lasts, the less impact on the environment. Recycling entails breaking down and rebuilding products into new useable goods. The options for recycled products is endless. From recycled paper and plastic to glass and leather, you are sure to find a material that supports your commitment to the planet. Discover a world of environmentally responsible promotional products that will allow you to responsibly promote your business—Contact Proforma today!

Service One Credit Union to Use Reclaimed Timber in Building of “Green” Addition
Service One Credit Union has purchased the timber from the historic Poole’s Mill (Poole Milling Company) for re-use in a “green” addition to its Campbell Lane Branch.
The original Poole’s Mill was built in 1830. After a devastating fire it was rebuilt in 1924. The Mill served a large portion of Western Kentucky for nearly 150 years producing flour, meal, and animal feed. The Mill played a vital role in the development of Webster County Kentucky and surrounding areas. The present structure is of superior design and was built using excellent oak timber for the floor joists and vertical posts. According to local citizens, some of this timber may have been from virgin trees. The purchase of the Mill’s timber by Service One Credit Union is not only a testament to the Credit Union’s green efforts, but also preserves an important piece of Kentucky history. The building has been disassembled and the materials are currently being transported to Bowling Green, KY for the construction of the “green” addition.
Dr. Marvin Russell, former Dean of Ogden College, Western Kentucky University, was born in a house across the road from the Poole Milling Company. He remembers hearing the single piston engine chugging continuously throughout the day as flour and cornmeal were ground from grain brought in by local farmers. He stated, “I have many fond memories from boyhood of time spent exploring the workings of the Poole Mill. I am delighted that the timbers and the history of this important community industry will be preserved.” He also remembers fishing and ice skating on the Mill pond.

Teaching by Example—Warren County Public Schools Practice what they Preach when it comes to Energy Conservation
By implementing energy-saving strategies, Warren County Public Schools have avoided a cost of $3.3 million over the past five years. In addition to using energy-saving strategies when buildings are remodeled or newly constructed, WCPS is also creating “energy teams” of students in the schools to educate students and encourage involvement.
“Our energy teams will begin in five elementary schools beginning in August,” says Jay Wilson, energy manager for Warren County Public Schools. “They will use NEED (National Energy Education Development—http://www.need.org/) material to guide them through the new program. NEED covers the Science of Energy, Sources of Energy, Electricity, Transportation Fuels, Energy Efficiency and Conservation, etc. This material is designed to help students understand the many aspects to energy and increase awareness for all our students and faculty.” These programs make energy conservation a real and practical part of students’ everyday lives, and learned at a young age, these methods are likely to become standard practice for them as they mature into our next generation of leaders.
Superintendant Dale Brown finds the success of the program encouraging. "The aggressive steps we’ve taken to address rising energy costs and the environmentally friendly measures we’ve implemented are sure to benefit the schools and community for many years to come.”

Executive Public Relations (EPR), a Bowling Green public relations firm that specializes in advertising, marketing and image development, is introducing their new line of organic t-shirts for their screen printing division. This new environmentally friendly transformation is due to the awareness that today’s market needs to build, produce, and sell products that preserve and protect the world around us.
With their new line of organic t-shirts, EPR is unveiling its “Trees for T-Shirts” campaign, with the support of the National Arbor Day Foundation to make Bowling Green a cleaner and greener place to live.
The “Trees for T-Shirts” campaign is a one-day event at Kereiakes Park on Tuesday, June 10, at 10 a.m., when the staff of EPR will begin the campaign by planting one tree to symbolize the importance of the environment. Immediately after there will be a 10-minute presentation and free T-shirts for those that attend. This tree has been donated via Schott Gardens recognizing our eco-friendly materials. This is just the beginning of the campaign for EPR: they are willing to plant one tree for every one hundred shirts that are sold.
EPR is inviting all Bowling Green businesses and residents to attend the event; that will be a beginning eco-challenge for all small businesses. Kevin Andrews, the President of EPR comments saying “We are going full circle, EPR is becoming greener in more ways than one. We use organic materials, eco-friendly inks, and renewable resources within our offices. This is just the start.”
