Newsweek recently released its 2009 list of the top 1,500 high schools in America, and while Bowling Green made its third appearance on the list, it managed to jump more than 500 places on the list from 2007 to being ranked No. 554 in the country. The Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science at Western Kentucky University, also made a special appearance in the magazine’s lists, devised by Washington Post Education Columnist Jay Mathews. The academy was excluded from the list of the top 1,500 schools in the country and instead recognized in a separate “Public Elites” category created for schools predominately consisting of “few or no average students.”Joining only 15 other schools recognized in the country, the Gatton Academy’s distinction marks the first time a school from Kentucky has been seen on the elite list.
